Rooibos is grown southwest of South Africa in the Western Cape province.

Traditionally, it has been used as a tea with a slice of lemon or honey to sweeten it; its preparation is very similar to that of black tea. Due to its color and black tea attributes, it has acquired the name "red tea."

Traditional medicinal uses of Rooibos include alleviating dermatological problems, allergies, asthma, and infantile colic. More recent findings have shown that Rooibos is known to assist with nervous tension and digestive problems as well.

The tea is naturally caffeine free yet contains powerful flavonoids (free-radical antioxidants that are very similar to polyphenols found in green tea), which some studies indicate can be up to 50 times more effective than the antioxidants found in green tea. It is known as the "Long Life" tea in Asia because many believe it contains anti-aging effects. When added to lotions, Rooibos has been shown to be an effective herbal remedy for certain skin ailments such as eczema and acne.
